The Red Wings have had a season to forget and are likely to be on the outside looking it when it comes to the Eastern Conference playoff picture but they will look to thrive in the underdog role for the rest of the season and that starts tonight against their old rivals from Colorado. The Wings are a team in transition as they have moved on from a handful of marquee pieces over the last couple of seasons and are likely to be in the rebuilding process for another season or two as they will need an overhaul to get back to the team that has synonymous with playoff hockey. Detroit is a woeful 19-42 in their last 61 games on the road but they have had a ton of success in Colorado against the Avs as they are 22-9 in their last 31 games in Denver and the road team is 9-3 in the last 12 games between these two sides and with the price the Wings are getting here they could be worth a long shot.

The Avalanche meanwhile have been inconsistent this season but they are very much in the race for a playoff spot in the Western Conference as they are just 3 points out of the final wild card spot. Colorado is loaded in their top 6 forward unit as they are led by Nathan Mackinnon, Gabriel Landeskog, and Mikko Rantanen but beyond their top grouping they run thin and will need some more balance if they’re going to get into the postseason and compete with some of the league’s best teams. Colorado is expected to send Semyon Varlamov in this spot as he will face off against Jimmy Howard in a matchup that odds makers are expecting to see the home side coast without much trouble.
The Wings are 5-12 in their last 17 against the Central division and are 1-4 in their last 5 meetings against Colorado while the Avs are a woeful 9-22 in their last 31 overall and are winless in their last 7 games against the Eastern Conference. Colorado has been terrible lately but if they’re going to make the playoffs they need their offense to get going and they should have no trouble here at home.
